Plan for your closet doors to swing outward or slide from side to side. Doing so will eliminate wasted space on the inside of your closet. When adding a door that swings outward, consider the location and swing of your entry and bathroom doors so that they won’t end up bumping into one another.

 

You’ll need adequate lighting inside your closet, especially if you plan to use it as a dressing area. An ideal light for a walk-in closet is one that is built into the door jamb and goes out automatically whenever the door is closed. For especially deep closets, you may want to consider fluorescent lighting down the center of this space instead.

 

A strategically placed mirror can not only help with dressing, but visually enlarge this area as well. A full-length mirror surrounded by cubbies or open shelving will ensure that as much space as possible is devoted to storage.
